Not all Android devices are equal
I appreciate and understand what you are saying but I don’t hear the same problems on the scale that we are experiencing with any other apps that run on Android phones - I don’t hear people complaining about Waze or TomTom etc not running on their Android whatever the make or model of their phone maybe.

And there is no consistency with it - one person uses a Pixel phone and it works, the next uses the same phone and it doesn’t. Even the same model iPhone is not working the same for different people.

No instability connection with the -30 software using an Iphone SE (2nd gen) with ISO 15.4.1 with a MY2022.

Two negatives for me are:
  • slow initial connection, as is common with everyone
  • map graphics are lacking for less traveled roads vs the Garmin XT

Hesitant at this point to move to -40 software due to issues reported.

From my experience of the update to _40, if _30 has a stable connection and is working for you, the update will improve nothing further for you. It certainly will do nothing for the two negatives you mention. However, as in my case, there is a strong possibility that it may introduce connectivity issues and the ‘ghost’ vehicle fault.

If you use some sort of intercom system. Disconnect it, connect the phone to the bike, then connect the intercom. On YT there are some videos that blame the intercom for taking up too much of the Bluetooth side of the phone.

I finally got delivery of my fully loaded 2022 Triple Black R1250RT from Berlin after a 5 month wait.
I’ve been riding it for 2 weeks now, and if I got a dollar for every time I pulled over to reboot my connection after it drops the Street Map Screen, I’d have 1/2 a tank of gas!

My previous ride was a 2006 RT with a Zumo 660 and a Sena 20S helmet com, so it’s a big upgrade in performance and tech for me.

I’ve been following this message board trying to figure out how to configure a stable platform using the connected app on my IPhone X and Sena 20S, and, after combining recommendations from this forum, I now have a Solid as a rock connection!

This is the settings that works for me on my iPhone:

Auto Lock Off:
settings>display and brightness>auto lock>Never

Background App Refresh:
settings>General>Background app refresh: Turn off all apps Except Connected App.

Notifications:
settings>turn off all Notifications Except Connected App.

No Apple Watch:
I forgot I had my apple watch on one ride and was loosing map mode connection again, next ride without the watch, solid connection.

My routine:
I check my phone settings listed above, I open the connected app first, then turn on the TFT display, wait for everything to load, then last item to power up is the Sena helmet com.

I can’t get the wonder wheel to control the volume yet, but the volume control on the Sena works fine as it always has. (I find the British male voice has the best enunciation for navigation)

I haven’t back engineered the settings to see what causes the Wi-Fi connection drop as I don’t want to mess with success.

I hope some of these suggestions work for you, as I know the frustration you feel dropping big bucks on your dream bike and not being totally happy.

PS.. I just got my first service done today after my 1,000km break in period, so I’m one happy camper right now and looking forward to my first group ride with the Bee Cee Beemers.

@Daniel Keen I believe you can also switch off your watch connecting to your phone and the wonder wheel will not control the volume on a Sena 20s, however, I think it will on the latest Senna devices.

As David points out - its only works on the 50 series Sena (and BMW Communicator of course) following a firmware upgrade in March this year. I‘ve got a ticket in with Sena at the moment trying to persuade their R&D to add it to the SRL2 - maybe you could request the same for the 20 series. They are trying to blame dated chipsets at the moment but of course it works on a BMW communicator which is really a re-badged Sena 10 series.

Another setting to confirm is that incoming calls display as banner and not full screen - prevents calls from pushing the Connected app to the background (it’s usually set to banner by default). Settings>Phone>Incoming Calls>Banner.

Be interesting to see which settings you can add back in again and it remains stable - I haven’t had any issues with Notifications or Background App refresh switched on … but then again, what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another !!

I had my bike's software updated from 11_007_35 to the new version " _40" while it was in being serviced not so much because it would improve connection issues (mine was fine with "_35") but because of the added bonus of programable shortcuts to the fairing buttons. :) Phone connection is just the same as it has always been with the new software, stable but a bit slow to initially connect up. Once connected it is absolutely fine! (Samsung Galaxy S9+) (y)

I’m on a group ride right now (2days 1000km) and have had no issues with my connections. I DID leave my Apple Watch at home which I suspect was causing issues.
When it’s time for the group to saddle up and leave, I don’t have the luxury to wait until everything is loaded and up and running, it go time. Within a few minutes down the road, all the screens automatically comes back to life without having to open the phone cubby (I leave my phone locked and loaded when off the bike for lunch).
My favourite buttons are 1Nav 2music 3 heated grips 4heated seat.
I’m loving this new bike! I used Dynamic mode for the first time yesterday and it’s been there ever since.

The _35 version was the original release version that did not have programmable buttons, then came version _30 which added the programmable buttons and stability, then the latest _40 version, which for me, has improved nothing but added the ‘ghost’ vehicle bug. Going from version _35 to _40, you have essentially skipped a version - which could turn out to be the secret to success.

The two versions I was comparing already have the programmable buttons added but its a good point you make that it may be worth going from version _35 to _40 if nothing else but to add the convenience of the programmable buttons.

The ‘ghost‘ vehicle profile bug seems to be a problem for iPhone users mainly. Its still quite random but I’m experiencing it probably one in every four connections and usually not the first connection of the day. I haven’t been able to narrow down if there is any specific scenario that causes it. I’ve had the same response from BMW that they know about it and it will get sorted in a future update (but they don’t say whether that‘s TFT and/or connected app update).

Can’t remember where here that I read this tip, but the ghost bike can pop up if you connect your headset before the phone connects to the TFT.
So extra steps for the connection dance, first let phone connect, then turn on Bluetooth headset and connect.
This is working for me, only time it doesn’t is when I forget to power down the Bluetooth headset at a stop.

Thanks for the tip Eccles, I will give that a go. I had read the suggestion that it helped create a stable connection but have not read anywhere that it could be linked to the ‘ghost’ vehicle bug.

In fact, thinking about my ride yesterday - initial start up, met a mate and stopped for coffee, rode to my parents and stopped there: each time the headset was switched off to start with but as normal, it was the first thing I switched back on before going through the rest of the connection process. No issues at all. I then stopped for fuel and this time, didn’t bother to switch the headset off in between - ‘ghost’ vehicle bug appeared.

Wonder if it is the order you connect or is it that the headset power needs re-cycling before connecting ???

Pretty sure it's the connection order 1. phone 2. Bluetooth headset.
I gather that if the headset connects 1st then the TFT has trouble fully recognising the bike. It's been mentioned that BMW are
aware of this bug and that we can expect a fix for it in the next Connected app/TFT software update.

My theory is we are beta testers so that when the 1300GS is released for 2023 with the 10.5 TFT, these issues are resolved to not annoy the very important to BMW Adventure crowd.

Yes, I’ve had this reply back from them :

Displaying "ghost vehicles" (e.g. "t.b.d.", BMW Motorrad) at the Connected App is a well-known bug. We already submitted a ticket to the responsible developers. As soon as a solution is available, we will provide it as a bugfix or within one of the next updates. Please be patient until then.

Kind Regards,

Steffen Kraft

I‘ve got a ticket in with Sena at the moment trying to persuade their R&D to add it to the SRL2.

Well, got a reply back from Sena this afternoon - this was reference to adding volume synchronisation between the BMW TFT and the SRL2 headset (controlling headset volume with the wonder wheel) :

We appreciate for bringing this concern to our attention. I have contacted the upper management about this concern but as of the moment " We dont think there will be any major updates to the SRL2. as we have two new SRL models almost ready to release ".

I asked them a few questions to see if they would give me any more information about the new SRL models - wait to see if they reply.
